Projects in Alliance with Micelio Abolicionista

Micelio Abolicionista is a group of people from various disciplines united by an interest in reflecting on the conflicts in Puerto Rico and proposing alternatives to address them from their roots. As abolitionists of the industrial prison complex, they position themselves against the central idea that runs through the dehumanizing framework of prisons: there are disposable people.

HASER and Micelio Abolicionista have joined forces to promote the social well-being of communities in Puerto Rico through community-based projects that advance equity and quality of life.

HASER 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsorship to the project for community development and social transformation.

More about Micelio Abolicionista

Micelio Abolicionista’s project is in constant transformation believing in the community co-construction of the social conditions necessary to address interpersonal and systemic harm from an anti-punitivist perspective that focuses on care and mutual support. This means that they reject the Industrial Penitentiary Complex and its manifestations in health, education, and body regulation agencies. It was founded by two community educators who today, together with an intergenerational and diverse group, aim to unlearn and act for the flourishing of life.

Micelio Abolicionista generates educational content and facilitates/co-creates spaces for healing and discussion with educators, families of deprived of liberty and formerly confined people, survivors of violence, university students, and LGBTQIA+ groups to rethink how we build security in the community, outside the State, centering the voices of those who are directly impacted and moving to nurture management through the diversity of experiences. They base their work on four pillars/strategies: Popular Education as proposed by Paulo Freire, Liberating Harm Reduction according to Shira Hassan, Transformative Justice inspired by Mariame Kaba and Emerging Strategy according to the author adrienne maree brown.

Mycelium (Micelio) is a fungal root system that grows underground in thread-like formations. This organism uses trust as a mechanism to build a vast reciprocal underground network that connects roots to each other and breaks down plant material for the creation of healthier ecosystems. Abolition is a long-term political vision whose goal is to eliminate incarceration and policing, creating long-lasting and sustainable alternatives to punishment (Critical Resistance). It is both a goal towards which we move and a set of actions and attitudes that we practice every day in all our relationships. Micelio Abolicionista affirms the commitment to building strong and empathetic relationships that foster trust in ourselves and other worlds for feeling/living/thinking.
