More about Taller Lumpen
Taller Lumpen believes in creating the living conditions that we deserve as a community and as a country proposing street art to rethink the ways in which we relate to each other in the public space, within the community, and with the environment.
Taller Lumpen works rescuing community land and encourages an inverse process of gentrification, where instead of moving, people live together, organize and create a community. Through the socialization of essential resources for a dignified life, socio-spatial dynamics of community impact and participatory design, open door policies, educational workshops and community meetings, Taller Lumpen proposes to contribute to improving the quality of life of the community that houses and surrounds them.
The word “Lumpen” is a shortening of the German “lumpenproletariat”, whose translation would be something similar to “ragged proletariat”, referring to an eminently urban social group that is made up of socially degraded and discarded individuals; temporary unemployed, those who are no longer employable, permanent unemployed, immigrants, trans and queer people, street workers and artists, sex workers, the homeless, and other urban subjects. This project is aimed at this group of people and their symbiotic relationship to generate safe spaces and resources for workers on the periphery while creating a sustainable urban space in community for the community.
